The United States Centers for Disease Control (CDC) has begun a vaccination campaign against both the seasonal influenza virus and the H1N1 (swine flu) virus. Patients with myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS) are recommended to receive both flu shots, in addition to a vaccine for pneumonia for flu-related complications. The flu shots may be administered simultaneously at different injection sites on the body.

Seattle Genetics Raises Funds For Research – Seattle Genetics announced that it is increasing its cash by approximately $118.2 million through the issuance of common stock. The funds will be used, among other things, for research and development, including clinical trials. The company has several compounds under development for the treatment of blood cancers. At the 14th Congress of the European Hematology Association (EHA), researchers from several South Korean hospitals presented a two year study in which they analyzed the outcome of Vidaza (azacitidine) treatments in myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS) patients who had a variety of pretreatment risk assessments. Their results indicated that patients’ pretreatment risk groups were a significant factor in predicting their response to this treatment.
