Onconova And SymBio Announce Collaboration For Estybon In Japan And South Korea – Onconova Therapeutics and SymBio Pharmaceuticals announced on Friday that they have signed an agreement that will give SymBio the exclusive license to develop and market Estybon (rigosertib, ON 01910.Na) in Japan and South Korea. Onconova will receive an upfront payment and additional payments from SymBio that are tied to development progress and sales of Estybon. Estybon is an anti-cancer drug that is being investigated for use in myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS) and certain solid tumors. It works by inhibiting cell growth and selectively killing cancer cells. LLS Awards Research Grants To Promising Areas Of Blood Cancer Research, Including MDS – The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) announced today that it is awarding 17 grants for a total of $10.2 million to areas of blood cancer research that it had identified earlier this year as underdeveloped but promising. Seven of the 17 grants will go towards research in MDS and acute myeloid leukemia that focuses on malignant stem cells and the development of targeted therapies. Free Conference For MDS Patients And Their Families In Nashville – On July 16, the Myelodysplastic Syndromes Foundation will host a free one-day conference for MDS patients and their families in Nashville, TN. The conference starts at 10 a.m. with a patient support group discussion. In the afternoon, new therapies and treatment options for MDS will be presented and discussed. SuperGen Begins Enrollment For Phase 1 Trial Of New MDS And AML Drug – The pharmaceutical company SuperGen, based in Dublin, CA, recently announced the first patient enrollment in the first Phase 1 trial for their developmental drug SGI-110. SGI-110 is a hypomethylating agent and has a mechanim of action similar to Vidaza (azacitidine) and Dacogen (decitabine). The goal of the Phase 1 trial is to determine a safe and effective dosing schedule for SGI-110 in myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS) and acute myeloid leukemia (AML) patients. Webinar On MDS Diagnosis And Classification – The Aplastic Anemia & MDS International Foundation will hold a free webinar on new strategies for diagnosing and classifying myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS) on January 19 at 12 p.m. EST. Light The Night Walks – The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s annual fundraising walks will be held at multiple locations throughout the United States and Canada this fall. Participants will light the night by carrying illuminated balloons to support the fight against blood cancers. Funds raised during the events will help fund lifesaving blood cancer research. U.K. Agency To Re-Assess Vidaza Use In Myelodysplastic Syndromes – The National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE), the agency that decides which treatments will be funded for English and Welsh patients, will re-assess the use of Vidaza (azacitidine) in myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS) patients after Celgene, the manufacturer of Vidaza, and other organizations successfully appealed NICE’s recommendation that Vidaza not be used to treat MDS. The European Medicines Agency approved Vidaza for treatment of MDS in March 2009. For more information on the ruling, please see the related press release.

The meeting will give patients an opportunity to hear from experts about diagnosis tests and procedures, current treatments, and how to optimize physical and emotional health throughout all stages of MDS.
